Phyllis Lyon and Del Martin with Kate Kendell, 2004 — Phyllis and Del are founders of Daughters of Bilitis, the first lesbian organization, founded in 1955. They are role models and wonderful, charming civil rights actvists. I first met them in the early ’70s at a lesbian and gay sexuality weekend that educated straight professionals at Glide Church. I read and re-read their amazing book “Lesbian Woman.” They also co-founded the Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club and served on City commissions.
