José Sarria, 1983 — José Sarria as Empress José I, the Widow Norton. Sarria became the first openly-gay person to to run for public office in the United States when he ran for San Francisco City Supervisor in 1961. He received 6,000 votes and it was the beginning of the gay community being taken seriously by politicians in the City.
